Lizzo wants to trademark the phrase ‘100% that bitch’

The ‘Truth Hurts’ singer wants to use the lyrics on a new merch line

We all know that Lizzo is 100 per cent that bitch, but it looks like she’s making it official. According to the Blast, the Houston-based artist filed to trademark the phrase from her 2017 song, “Truth Hurts”, back in June, with the intention of using it on her upcoming clothing merch. The line will include T-shirts, jackets, hoodies, hats, bandanas, wristbands, and more.

But she has been called out on Twitter by musician Mina Lioness, who claims that she wrote the same phrase in a tweet seven months before the release of Lizzo’s track. On February 25, 2017, Lioness tweeted: “I did a DNA test and found out I’m 100% that bitch”. In September that year, “Truth Hurts” came out featuring the same lyric.

The following year, Lioness tweeted Lizzo, saying: “Now everyone believes those were your words, when in fact they were mine. My creativity, my wit and my comedy”. Lizzo responded by saying that her song was written in June 2017, and was inspired by a meme on Instagram that used the phrase. “I’ve never seen ur viral tweet but I’m glad it exists,” she concluded.

With news of the trademark across the internet, Lioness wrote on Twitter yesterday (August 28): “What I cannot get over is how brazen Lizzo and her team have been in ignoring my presence. They’re doing it because they know I have no capital to address her. I’m just the poor Black girl from London that don’t have a dog in the fight.” Lizzo has yet to comment.

Other artists have been pretty on it with trademarking their lyrics and catchphrases – Megan Thee Stallion has officially undertaken the task of trademarking her seemingly ubiquitous catchphrase ‘Hot Girl Summer’.
