Kim Gordon is set to release her first ever solo album, No Home Record. The former Sonic Youth icon has also unveiled the first single off the record, “Sketch Artist”. In the Loretta Dahrenholz-directed music video for the track, Gordon plays a taxi driver for an app called ‘UNTER’, wreaking havoc on the LA streets.
No Home Record comes produced by Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, Yves Tumor, John Cale, Charli XCX) and was recorded at Sphere Ranch in Los Angeles. It takes its name from Chantal Akerman’s film No Home Record. According to a press release, the album echoes Gordon’s earliest forays into music-making in the early 1980s, when she would record using a guitar, a drum machine, and some lyrics sniped from magazine advertisements.
In an album biography written by artist and poet Elaine Kahn, No Home Record is decribed as perfectly illustrating “Gordon’s singular lyric capacity to meld cultural critique, divulgence and humor”. Kahn also writes that the idea of “purchasing utopia” is explored throughout the record.
Widely known for her work with Sonic Youth prior to their break up in 2011, Gordon has since had other musical projects, such as Body/Head and Glitterbust. Her solo album arrives with Gordon having since returned to California, where she was raised, after many years living on the East Coast. Speaking to Cult MTL earlier this year, Gordon admitted that “working by myself I don’t have to think about coming to a decision with someone else, so it’s more freeing”.
