Watch the first trailer for the upcoming M.I.A. documentary

MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A., Steven Loveridge’s documentary about the Sri Lankan artist, is out September 21

M.I.A. has shared the first trailer for MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A., Steven Loveridge’s documentary tracing the life of the Sri Lankan artist. Drawn from never-before-seen personal video footage taken over the past 22 years, the film profiles M.I.A.’s journey from young refugee to internationally recognised pop star.

The film first debuted at Sundance, where it won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award. It subsequently went on to show at New Directors/New Films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and at the Berlin International Film Festival, where during a panel interview after the screening M.I.A. said that she hadn’t “fully digested” its content.

This is the first official trailer for the film, and gives an insight into some of the footage that was used to tell its story. Back in 2013, a teaser was leaked online, which featured some of M.I.A.’s big name collaborators – however, this trailer does not reflect Loveridge’s final edit of the film. Reports from early screenings suggest that the film has changed dramatically over the years. Follow the official website for the documentary for updates, or follow it on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A hits cinemas on September 21 (UK) and September 28 (US). Watch the trailer below.
