Zoë Kravitz, Tilda Swinton and Iggy Pop on what creation means to them

For Dom Pérignon’s latest campaign, Collier Schorr photographs seven of the world’s most iconic creators, who tell Dazed about their personal definitions of creation

Today, iconic champagne brand Dom Pérignon unveils its new campaign – a series of portraits by Collier Schorr, along with a film by Camille Summers-Valli. Titled Creation is an eternal journey, 104-year-old brand’s campaign features some of the world’s most iconoclastic creators, including Tilda Swinton, Iggy Pop, Zoë Kravitz, Anderson .Paak, and Takashi Murakami, along with Swedish dancer Alexander Ekman and Northern Irish chef Clare Smyth.

While Schorr and Summers-Valli were producing the images and film, Dazed Media’s own co-founder and CEO Jefferson Hack was also behind the lens, asking the talent questions. “For this project, I’m playing the role of the journalist,” he explains. “You have to take the cues from their train of thought. When they have a moment when that conversation inspires them, and it gets them to be reflective of their own process and they learn something about themselves by doing it, then you make a bond.” (Watch our exclusive behind-the-scenes video with Jefferson below.)

In the compelling portraits and film, the campaign stars explain what creation means to them; how they find inspiration and what their perceptions of reinvention are – after all, popping a bottle of bubbly so often marks a new beginning. You can watch the full film now, or flick through the gallery above to see more of the campaign imagery. Or, if you’re a creative yourself looking for a dose of inspiration, read on to discover what Iggy Pop, Tilda Swinton and Zoë Kravitz had to say.

IGGY POP

Collier Schorr: What’s your definition of creation?

Iggy Pop: Creation is a big love. It’s like a French kiss. Creation is a release, baby! Like a birth and you’re like a mother who is arranging things and finally out comes the baby and there are problems that go with that.

I find the big, inspiring moments usually come with great discomfort. Overcoming your mistakes, that's freedom, reinvention. Things change, nothing lasts forever.

TILDA SWINTON

Collier Schorr: What’s your definition of creation?

Tilda Swinton: [Creation is] a leap of faith. It’s what makes the world go round. Beginner's mind, not knowing what you're doing, that's very important. It's like riding a good horse in a whole pack – you're not completely in control and it's such a relief.

Inspiration? [It's like] waiting for the weather, waiting for the wind. Listen to your body, your pulse, your breath. I think if one's dreams are too fixed and precise, they're breakable. If you think of your dreams as being clouds, clouds can be a million different shapes. They never repeat.

ZOË KRAVITZ

Collier Schorr: What’s your definition of creation?

Zoë Kravitz: Creation is the act of looking for something, searching. You dig and dig and dig, and then when you find it, something clicks. You have a vision. Creation is like a dance – dancing with something, [as if] time doesn’t exist anymore. Creation is an offering, it’s sacred.

Collier Schorr: Where does inspiration come from?

Zoë Kravitz: Inspiration is driven by emotion. I feel like I’m in communication with something that’s bigger than me. We’re constantly growing and changing, and we learn from our mistakes – they show us what we don’t want and who we don’t want to be. It just depends on if you learn from them or not.
