Everything we know about Frank Ocean’s upcoming directorial debut

The former Dazed cover star is currently working on his first-ever film, which stars Rye Lane’s David Jonsson

You never truly know what Frank Ocean will do next. From music to cock rings, the 37-year-old singer and songwriter has now set his sights on the film world.

Last year, rumours swirled that Ocean was directing a film with Taylor Russell as his leading lady – though this remains unconfirmed. However, yesterday (January 30), it was officially announced that David Jonsson will star in the lead role of Ocean’s upcoming film. The independent project has begun shooting in Mexico City, though its title, plot, and additional cast details remain under wraps.

Jonsson is fast becoming one of the most exciting young British actors. He won hearts in Rye Lane (2023), starred in Alien: Romulus (2024), and appeared in the first season of the critically acclaimed workplace drama Industry.

While fans are eager to see Ocean’s latest creative endeavour, some can’t help but feel bitter about his continued absence from music. One fan remarked, “this man will do anything except record a new album.”

Still, with Ocean leading the project, anticipation is already building. Whether this film arrives sooner or later, one thing is for sure – it’ll be worth the wait.
