The Netflix series based on the notorious grifter Anna Delvey and her rise into the upper echelons of New York City’s social elite now has a cast.
Inventing Anna is based on Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People”, detailing how she befriended and subsequently duped rich individuals out of thousands of dollars to pursue her dream of opening a private club in downtown Manhattan. Julia Garner, who recently won an Emmy for her role in Netflix’s Ozark, will take the lead as Delvey, who posed as a German heiress to help con her way into exclusive events and parties, becoming an Instagram icon and purveyor of courtroom lewks along the way.
The Netflix show has already been commissioned for 10 episodes, and will also feature Veep star Anna Chlumsky, who will play a journalist attempting to uncover the truth about Delvey as she goes on trial for her crimes. Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox will play a personal trainer – referred to in the original New York Magazine expose as taking a “motherly” interest in Delvey – while Katie Lowes will play friend Rachel, who “worships” the scammer according to Variety.
Alexis Floyd, best known for her appearances in The Bold Type, a show inspired by the life former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, will play a hotel concierge who is drawn in by Anna’s charm and introduces her to New York’s party scene.
An official release date for the show is yet to be announced.
