Thom Yorke announces album and Paul Thomas Anderson film collaboration

Unveiling details of his upcoming record ANIMA, Yorke also teased a namesake short film with the cult filmmaker

Following his series of enigmatic advertisements, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has finally taken to Twitter to unveil his upcoming album release, as well as a surprise short film collaboration with cult filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. The one-reeler already has an eclectic feel of a cult classic.

The heavily teased project is in partnership with streaming goliath Netflix, who’s branded the film a “mind-bending visual piece”. It’s set to be released on June 27, the same day as his upcoming album – now confirmed to be titled ANIMA – and will feature three songs from the new record. Netflix has also confirmed that ANIMA will have a smaller preview in selected IMAX theatres on June 26.

This isn’t the first time Yorke and Anderson have worked together – the 25-time Academy Award nominee has worked with Radiohead before, producing the video for their 2016 song “Dreaming”. Anderson has also formerly worked with band member Johnny Greenwood, who has written a number of scores for his films, including Phantom Thread, which gained him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score.
