Despite that fact that Blade Runner was originally released in 1982 and set in 2019, its highly anticipated sequel, Blade Runner 2049 was only released last year.
It seems that Ridley Scott’s retrofuture has made a lasting impression on cinema and TV as the replicant, and replicant hunters will be the subject of a new anime series on Adult Swim. The storyline for Blade Runner-Black Lotus is being kept under lock and key but it is known that there will be 13 half-hour episodes set in 1932, featuring some of our favourite characters from the Blade Runner universe.
Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama are directing all 13 episodes, following their directorial work on Ghost in the Shell. Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo will be a creative producer. Watanabe also wrote and directed Blade Runner Black Out 2022, an anime short which was one of three anime shorts anticipating last year’s Blade Runner 2049.
Talking about the show, Adult Swim’s SVP/Creative Director, Jason DeMarco said that Ridley’s classic is “one of the defining films of my life... To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”
