Miley Cyrus is dressing like she wants to deregulate the financial markets

Serving Reagan realness in new season Saint Laurent, the singer’s latest look borrows from an era of all-out economic excess

Miley Cyrus wants to deregulate the globe’s financial systems. While that may be a lie, she did wear an outfit at the weekend which made it look like she wanted to, so who’s to know? On Sunday (April 27), the Southern singer stepped out in Paris in a lambskin midi skirt, elbow-length leather gloves and a belted leather jacket with a pair of cinderblock shoulder pads stitched inside. The look, from Saint Laurent’s most recent Paris runway, had all the hallmarks of the 1980s’ Wall Street excess, like she’d been transported directly from the trading room floors of Reagan-era America.

For the last few seasons, Anthony Vaccarello has been pulling 80s and 90s references from the Saint Laurent archive – populating his runways with brash jewel tones, hulking shoulders and slick suits – and the AW25 women’s show was no different. That catwalk also acted as further evidence for some that we are re-entering an era of ‘Boom Boom’ fashion, which cultural theorist Sean Monahan first posited back in December 2024 on his substack 8Ball, defined by a return to codes of 1980s excess. Though others might think that 2025 will instead be ruled by a regression to ‘basic’ dressing, it seems that Miley’s adoption of the look this weekend might just help to usher in ‘Boom Boom’ after all.

Elsewhere in the Cyrusverse, the singer is well and truly back on her fashion bullshit, having reappeared in the wild after a period away from the paps’ prying flashbulbs. Just last week, Cyrus was spotted in New York outside of her hotel in a ribbed two-piece from Alaïa, followed by a camera crew wearing an oversized Saint Laurent jacket and black McQueen boots, and has also been partial to a baggy shirt moment in front of the camera too. All these seemingly sudden appearances are far from a coincidence – Cyrus’ new album Something Beautiful is due out May 30, which would make sense as to why she’s suddenly turned the sidewalk into a runway over the last couple of days. Which fresh-off-the-catwalk fit will she go for next?
