Street style: 2010’s aesthetics reigned at New York Fashion Week

From skinny neck ties to shredded band tees, photographer Darrel Hunter captured the best looks on the streets at NYFW

If there’s one thing that’s been made clear through SS24, it’s the resurgence of the 2010s-era so-called indie sleaze revival. Need proof? Just ask New York label Vaquera’s messy, indie-club collection which ushered in the comeback of 2012’s viral “Comme des Fuckdown” cap, Rome-based Cormio who shouted out to 2010s pop punk idols like Avril Lavigne via its torn-up, fish-net-clad models, or the endless stream of Ugg boots appearing throughout the schedule [yes, we will be purchasing Ashley Williams’ pink “I heart ME” boots come SS24].

Rewinding back to our first stop of the fashion season, however, it’s clear that New York’s fashion crowd came prepared for the resurgence. Snapped by street style photographer Darrel Hunter, showgoers were spotted wearing shredded graphic band tees paired with oversized leopard print shorts and chunky platform boots, pleated mini skirts peeking out from underneath shirt and tie sets, and thick chokers and cross necklaces laying atop lingerie slips printed with Tumblr-era imagery or tongue-in-cheek slogan tanks.

Meanwhile, some guests opted for their own, modern takes on the trends. In particular, skinny neckties came paired with oversized zip-up hoodies and tube tops, embellished with looping metal wire and paired with long Chopova Lowena skirts, or wrapped around necks as ultra-thin scarves over bright-red party dresses. Elsewhere, another showgoer recreated another holy grail of 2010s fashion, Alexa Chung’s muddy Glasto wear. See: distressed white tank, belted denim shorts, shrugged-off cardigan, knee-high biker boots, boho bag, and cigarette in hand, obvs.

Like most fashion week street style, it wouldn’t be complete without a few celebrity sightings, and – fitting for the indie sleaze era – Hunter captured none other than Girls star Jemima Kirke [Jessa Johansson] from behind his lens. The British TV star-slash-Instagram therapist [if you haven’t seen her blunt IG story Q+As, it’s time to look now] showed up to Puppets and Puppets wearing a sheer lace maxi dress, red snakeskin jacket, and eyeball earrings, all supplied by the brand.
