The spring 2022 ‘New Heritage’ issue of Dazed is here

Mustafa, Tenzing, a Virgil tribute and a game of rumours: the new issue explores what to do with our shared and personal heritage, and the ways history can be a canvas for creativity

Welcome to the spring 2022 issue of Dazed. You can buy a copy here

What is heritage? The new issue of Dazed unpacks the stories that make up our shared cultural history; how they bind us together, and how they can be harnessed to forge new paths for the future. In a season marked by tremendous losses, it’s an issue created with an overarching sense of hope – hope for a future built on the foundations laid by innovators like Virgil Abloh and André Leon Talley.

Photographed by Paolo Roversi for one of four spring covers, musician and spoken-word mystic Mustafa drifts to his Toronto youthhood to better understand his new life as a songwriter of extraordinary power. Our youngest-ever cover photographer, Tenzing, takes us deep into the Himalayan community he calls home. There’s a tribute to the generation-defining Virgil Abloh in a close-knit cover shot by Viviane Sassen and styled by his close collaborator, Dazed’s editor-in-chief IB Kamara. Finally, Will Scarborough calls the shots in a YSL fashion special providing a much-needed moment of connectivity.

Elsewhere in the issue, fashion’s own Willy Wonka Francesco Risso takes us on a tour of Marni’s magical SS22 collection, and his unapologetic vision for the storied Italian brand; we ask four of Virgil’s most crucial collaborators to pick one of his creative cheat codes, and Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai curates a gallery of unseen work on the digi-lines of protest.

Take a trip to the barrios of the Dominican Republic, where a new wave of dembow musicians are shaking up the sexual and sonic status quo; mythic rapper John Glacier juggles geography and Chicago’s Heaux History Project travel back in time to salvage forgotten Black sex-work stories.
