On the first anniversary of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing, Virginie Viard has marked the occasion by revealing she will bring her first Métiers d’Art collection for Chanel to London this June.
First presenting the collection in Paris last December, where she enlisted Sofia Coppola to update the Grand Palais to replicate Gabrielle Chanel’s Parisian apartment, the French designer is now set to bring the show to the Old Billingsgate, where the venue will also be transformed to mirror the iconic apartment.
With the original show featuring Lagerfeld’s muse Kaia Gerber and supermodel Gigi Hadid, the collection was made up of monochrome versions of the classic tweed skirt-suits paired with mini Gabrielle bags — trés chic.
Reflecting on the presentation last year, Viard told Vogue, “We had to think of a new way of doing things... the codes invented by Gabrielle Chanel and rendered sublime by Karl Lagerfeld... I like mixing them up.”
Also set to travel to Beijing this May, this show has now been postponed, alluding to the coronavirus epidemic. Writing in a statement the house explained: “Considering the current situation and following the guidance of Chinese authorities, Chanel has decided to postpone its project of a replica of the Paris – 31 Rue Cambon 2019/20 Métiers d’Art collection in May in Beijing to a later and more appropriate moment.”
Virginie Viard’s Métiers d’Art Collection will be on show in London on June 4 at the Old Billingsgate.
