Running from 1996 to 2005, INDEX Magazine was one of the most innovative and influential publications of its day, articulating peak style and culture at the turn of the millennium.
Founded in New York by artist Peter Halley and publisher Bob Nickas, INDEX drew inspiration from Warhol’s Interview in its engaging, conversational tone, approaching contemporary art, cinema, fashion and with a distinctive flair and a roster of amazing photographers and writers.
During its reign, INDEX was a space for burgeoning new talent to publish their work, regularly featuring early-career photography by the likes of Wolfgang Tillmans, Juergen Teller, Leeta Harding, and many more era-defining image-makers.
Now, during Paris Design Week, an exhibition with Wahter Studio in Paris brings together original imagery, archive covers and spreads taken from the 51 existing issues of the celebrated cult magazine. There’s also a reading room where visitors can explore rarely-seen copies of INDEX and immerse themselves in this rich archive, featuring pioneering interviews such as Alexander McQueen interviewed by Björk, Hedi Slimane by Klaus Biesenbach, and Werner Herzog by Doug Aitken.
