Jawara Alleyne’s collections feel more refined with every season. Though he stays true to his DNA of safety pins and swathes of fabric knotted together, the clothes are becoming increasingly polished and wearable. His strengths are in his graphic t-shirts, vests and open shirts, of which there were more than ever at his SS26 show, held on Sunday evening (September 21). The collection was titled Tabanca, originating from Trinidadian and Tobagonian dialect, meaning romantic longing or heartbreak – though more recently is a term adopted by wider Caribbean culture through its frequent use in soca music.
