Rocha explored stages of girlhood throughout her collection, citing the essay My Dress Rehearsal: or How Mrs. Clarke Taught Me How to Sew by Maureen Freely, which can be found within Nancy Honey’s photobook Entering the Masquerade: Girls from Eleven to Fourteen. There’s a stereotype that girlhood comes only in shades of pink and with bows on it, and while this is a common trope of Rocha’s work, this collection also rebels against it. Each look was distinctly dishevelled – crinolines were exposed, straps fell down and lacy bras were on full display.
