Today, if you discovered a rapper was collaborating with a fashion brand, you might think ‘likely place for them to be.’ Hip-hop and high fashion seem like obvious bedfellows now, but back in 1996, when Tommy Hilfiger tapped Coolio and Treach from Naughty by Nature to walk his AW96 men’s show, a rapper-runway cameo was practically unheard of. Despite that, Tommy knew that change was in the air, and even invited Treach back to perform at his now-iconic London Fashion Week SS97 closing show. (Lil’ Kim, Baby Phat show, New York, 2000)
