After a short period of darkness, the show began. Beaming spotlights revealed the church’s cracked floor tiles as Hari Nef strode across them. Opening in an ivory bodice with everyday objects tucked into its cups, Nef was followed by Kai-Isaiah Jamal in a black corset and smoking jacket, later followed by Richie Shazam in a lace-up denim creation. Corsetry dominated the unabashedly feminine collection – full of bulging skirts and leather brassiere – but it never veered into the demure or mild. On the contrary, these formidable femmes were here to claim their own fashion domain.
