Sad Sick Girlz

I’ve spent my life trying to process what it means to not only be a woman in this world, but to also be a woman with a physical disability. Two of my sisters and I were born with a rare neuromuscular disorder that affects our muscles and has resulted in multiple orthopedic and eye surgeries. ⠀⠀ Through my art, I explore how poorly people with disabilities are treated—and why. My figures reflect the dehumanizing existence that my community, and many communities, faces in our society. They convey the disparate fear that those with power and those without it simultaneously feel. They emphasize that we are more disabled by able bodied people around us than we ever could be by our abnormalities. They tell my story—all the pain and all the triumph. Love, @hannah.layden
