The woman who swore at Trump has won a local government seat

Woman who gave Trump the finger wins in local government election

Juli Briskman lost her job in 2017 after flipping off the president’s convoy of cars

In 2017, a photo of a cyclist giving the finger to Donald Trump’s procession of vehicles went viral, resulting in the woman unfairly losing her job. Now, Juli Briskman – the hero in the photo – has had the last laugh as she’s won a local government seat in Virginia.

Briskman will represent her district in Loudoun county near Washington DC, sitting on the county board of supervisors. The 52-year-old used the viral image as a key part of her campaign, ultimately defeating Republican Suzanne Volpe, who’s represented the Algonkian district on the board since 2011.

“Looking forward to representing my friends and neighbours in #Algonkian District who backed me up today!” Briskman wrote on Twitter. “So proud that we were able to #FlipLoudoun.”

After being photographed flipping off Trump’s convoy of cars two years ago, Briskman was let go from her job as a government contractor. Her bosses said they were “separating” from her after Briskman made the photo her profile picture, allegedly violating the company’s social media policy which says employees can’t have “lewd” or “obscene” things on their pages.

Following her firing, a GoFundMe campaign was set up in Briskman’s name – called ‘Thank You Juli Briskman’ – and raised $142,000 (£110,250). The description read: “Juli Briskman is an inspiration to us all. This week we learned that she was fired from her employer for exercising her first amendment rights.”

At the time, Briskman filed a wrongful termination lawsuit – which ended up being dismissed – and successfully sued the company.

Virginia also elected its first Muslim state senator yesterday, and Democrats took control of both the state senate and house for the first time in over 20 years. “I’m here to officially declare today,” the state’s governor Ralph Northam said last night, “that Virginia is officially blue.”
