Sacha Baron Cohen is being sued by a politician for $95 million

Republican Roy Moore is going after the provocative comedian for his appearance on the Who Is America? series

Former Republican candidate Roy Moore is sueing comedian and actor Sacha Baron Cohen for a sum of $95 million.

Moore and his wife are suing the actor and the show networks CBS and Showtime. The Moore family are pressing for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and fraud.

The politician was a guest on the actor’s show, Who Is America?, in the third episode. He believed that he was invited on Yerushalayim TV, a made up Israeli TV series. Judge Moore was to receive an “award for his strong support of Israel in commemoration of its 70th anniversary as a nation state”.

In the episode, Baron Cohen plays the character of Erran Morad, a supposed Israeli anti-terrorism expert and former Mossad agent. In the interview, they discuss the technology advancements of the Israeli army. The actor pulled out what looked like the metal detector used by airport securities, claiming the magical wand can detect a paedophile. The machine beeped only when close to the politician. Moore ended the interview and walked out of the room, after realising the scam.

The case brought to the Washington D.C court accuses Baron Cohen of defaming Moore, stating that Moore suffered extreme emotional distress” as a result of “being falsely portrayed as a sex offender and paedophile” on the show.

Moore, former chief of justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, had been accused of multiple sexual encounters with minors when he was in his thirties. The accusations came out during last year’s Senate race. Having Trump’s support during the race certainly didn’t help since he lost to a Democrat, Doug Jones. The last time Alabama had a Democratic senator was 25 years ago.

“Sacha Baron Cohen, who is not only low class but also a fraudster, will now, along with Showtime and CBS, be held accountable for his outrageous and false, fraudulent and defamatory conduct which callously did great emotional and other damage to this great man and his wife and family,” Moore’s representative Larry Klayman of conservative group Freedom Watch said.

Another episode of the series saw a Georgia politician resign after he shouted racial slurs and exposed his bum in what he was told was a self-defence exercise.
