Music / RiseLower Heaven (California, US)Nu-gaze from the Californian quartet makes songs for gloomy afternoonsShareLink copied ✔️January 21, 2010MusicRiseText Alice Pfeiffer Lower Heaven (California, US) Lower Heaven is the next name on all Nu-Gaze followers’ lips. The quartet from Silverlake, California, incorporates post-punk and psychedelic undertones that the band-mates grew up listening to. Their dark melodic songs talk about guns, nature and shadows – and are ideal for gloomy thoughts and rainy afternoons.WHAT......is the origin of your band name? The name was taken from an Echo and the Bunnymen song called Higher Hell. After we had it for some time we found out that Lower Heaven meant so many other things, its mentioned several times in the Koran as a lower layer in the universe like our solar system....words would best describe your band?Dark yet pretty, a mix of old and new....is so special about you? What people probably think is most unique is our use of the electric autoharp used as a rhythm guitar in many our songs. Another unique component is probably the vocals which are very dreamy and the mix of vintage instruments used to create our unique sound....are your favorite three albums ever? That’s a hard one and depends on who you ask in the band. I think it would consist of a mix Beatles, MBV, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, 13th Floor Elevators to the Pixies, The Cure etc......are your songs about?A lot of the older songs are about not having a traditional positive outlook on life as well, trying to deal in interpersonal situations, and the journeys we take in life. The newer songs are about everything from the power a gun has, the shadow people in the trees, taking chances and doing something your life before its too late and nature in general. You could say the new stuff is a lot more fantastical hopefully taking the user somewhere instead of inside our heads....would be your ideal musical collaboration? We would love to work with Roky Erickson, Oasis RIP, Leonard Cohen, Jesus and Mary Chain and of course Echo and the Bunnymen....is your worst vice?Music....is the meaning of life?Wish we knew.
