Phoebe Bridgers has responded to an LA-based musician’s “preemptive cover” of the opening track from her follow-up to Punisher. The snippet – admittedly, a pretty spot-on parody of Bridgers’ songwriting – was shared by singer-songwriter Jensen McRae on Friday (January 15).
“In 2023 Phoebe Bridgers is gonna drop her third album & the opening track will be about hooking up in the car while waiting in line to get vaccinated at dodger stadium and it’s gonna make me cry,” McRae writes on Twitter. “This is my preemptive cover of what I imagine it will sound like.”
The 52-second clip has since gained some notable responses from the likes of Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, who writes: “Ummmm this song is so good.” Giving recognition where it’s due, another commenter has suggested that the clip “sounds more like Phoebe Bridgers than Phoebe Bridgers.”
Since McRae posted the imaginary cover, other musicians have also chimed in, adding their own prospective verses. “These roasts are beautiful,” Bridgers adds, commenting on one addition to the track.
Responding to people eager to hear more from McRae after listening to the cover, the singer adds that she does have an album coming out this year. “If Lorde & Phoebe don’t drop I will fill the void but if they DO my album can be the appetizer at the sadgirl feast.”
