Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio is scheduled to open in Nottingham in September
Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio is slated to run from September 26, 2020 to January 3, 2021 at Nottingham Contemporary.
Curated by Cédric Fauq and Olivia Aherne, Grace Before Jones is billed as “a cross between fan-fiction, study, and biography”, and will “question black image-making and gender binarism as well as both performance and the performance of life”, according to Nottingham Contemporary’s website.
“Departing from the observation that Grace Jones is not one but multiple, the exhibition Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio unfurls a range of Grace Joneses: from disco queen to dub cyborg; Jamaican to French; runway model to nightclub performer; black to white; feminine to masculine.”
The exhibition will also include work from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Mapplethorpe, Lynn Goldsmith, ACT UP, and more.
Many UK galleries are reopening from next month following long closures earlier in the year. The Nottingham Contemporary website notes that the dates of the Grace Before Jones exhibition may be subject to change due to the COVID-19 crisis.
