Lana Del Rey shares a new spoken word piece, patent leather do-over

The piece, soundtracked by Jack Antonoff, is from the singer’s upcoming poetry collection, behind the iron gates – insights from an institution

Last night (May 23), Lana Del Rey shared the most recent of her spoken word poetry pieces, titled “patent leather do-over”. Once again, the poem debuted on Instagram, with music from her Normal Fucking Rockwell! collaborator Jack Antonoff.

The poem directly addresses Sylvia Plath and her 1963 novel The Bell Jar, and will feature in one of Del Rey’s upcoming poetry books, behind the iron gates – insights from an institution, which was announced in a series of Instagram posts over the last few days.

Del Rey has previously shared poetry and artwork from another, delayed, poetry collection titled Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass.

Her recent Instagram posts – which additionally revealed the release date of her new album – have also caused some controversy regarding Lana’s comparison of herself to other female musicians, mostly women of colour. The singer has since attempted to clarify her original comments, in a later post.

Listen to “patent leather do-over” in the video below.
