Lorde is delaying her album as she mourns her dog’s death

She told fans: ‘I need to see the good again’

Earlier this year, Lorde teased to her fans that she has been working on her new album, or rather, that it was “in the oven”.

Now, in a newsletter sent to her fans, she has explained that she’s pressing pause on the follow up to 2017’s Melodrama in order to mourn her dog’s death. Lorde explained that her light had “gone out” after Pearl, her pet, suffered two cardiac arrests, according to Pitchfork

Lorde adopted Pearl in 2018 and he was quickly “instrumental to the discovery that was taking place” for the forthcoming album, she has said. “I felt he led me towards the ideas. And it’s going to take some time and re-calibration, now that there’s no shepherd ahead of me, to see what the work is going to be.”

In the newsletter, Lorde wrote: “So I’m asking for your patience, as 2020 comes around and you start to wonder where the next record is. I have lost my boy, and I need some time to see the good again, to finish making this for you. It won’t be the same work — as anyone who has felt loss can understand, there’s a door that opens that you step through, and everything is different on the other side. But when this great loss crystallizes inside me, and my chest rebuilds around it, hopefully I’ll be able to finish up, and share it with you, and we’ll all grow together, as we always do.”

Upset by the news, some fans have been suggesting they will go to any lengths necessary to get Lorde back in the studio. However, with recording on hold, the album will be delayed until further notice, meaning that, for now, fans will just have to keep Pure Heroine and Melodrama on repeat.
