Taylor Swift cancels Melbourne show over animal rights concerns

The singer has been accused of putting ‘money before compassion’

Taylor Swift has pulled out of a gig at a horse racing event in Melbourne, Australia for “scheduling issues” according to her management. Mushroom Events said in a statement that changes to her “Asian promo schedule have made it logistically impossible for her to be here”.

Since being announced as a headline act at the Melbourne Cup, the “London Boy” singer had received criticism from animal rights activists, calling her out for “endorsing animal abuse” – six horses have died on the race course in Melbourne since 2013 and one last year had to be euthanised after fracturing its shoulder.

But the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses – who are in favour of banning horse racing altogether – claim that Swift cancelled the show as a result of their campaigning. They accused the singer of putting “money before compassion by agreeing to perform at the 2019 Melbourne Cup”. Since her cancellation was confirmed however, the group sent Swift a message of support: “Thank you Taylor!” they said in a Facebook post, “we are absolutely delighted with the news.” A replacement headliner has yet to be announced.
