Yeezus is taking his gathering to the festival for Easter Sunday
Kanye West has been performing a Sunday Service for some time. What does it entail? Well, it’s a once-weekly gathering that the rapper has taken around the United States; there’s a gently religious vibe, but mostly it’s about people coming together to perform music. And this Sunday (April 21) it’s moving to Coachella.
Given that Kanye reportedly pulled out of headlining Coachella after festival organisers told him that he wasn’t going to get a giant, custom-built dome stage – because it would have meant demolishing the toilets – the Sunday Service is likely to be a pretty huge deal, drawing equally huge crowds. That’s if people get up in time for the 9AM start after tonight’s partying.
The Sunday Service will be held at “the mountain”, which is a hill (not actually a mountain) in the Coachella grounds, where festivalgoers usually watch dusk fall. For those not attending the festival, though, it will be livestreamed on the Coachella YouTube channel from the start time (and that’s 5pm on Sunday for UK viewers).
With Kanye’s gospel reworkings of his old tunes, some likely celebrity appearances – guests from the Kardashians to Tyler, the Creator and Katy Perry have previously appeared – and the Coachella Valley, it’s likely to be pretty special.
Plus, it will be Easter Sunday. “Jesus Walks” is pretty much a given.
