Missy Elliott says she’s lost unreleased music by Prince

There was talk of the two musical icons collaborating too, sob

Fans of Prince have been salivating at recent news that the vaults at Paisley Park could be opened to release bootlegs and never-before-heard tracks to the public, according to Prince collaborator Jimmy Jam. Now, in a recent interview, Missy Elliott has come forward and admitted to misplacing unreleased music by Prince, which he gave her years ago.

Speaking on CBC Music’s The Strombo Show, The Cookbook rapper recalled meeting Prince at a club in Los Angeles after asking his permission to use a lookalike in her show. From their first meeting, she said, the artist wanted to collaborate.

“He had sent me some stuff, music of his and I moved and I could never find that music,” she explained. “And yesterday I was sitting there saying, ‘I have to go to my house, in my storage space and find this music.” Apparently, she’s yet to find the tapes.

Missy referred to the purple pop icon, who passed away in April at age 57, as “a genius”. “When he entered the room, he was like a giant… I mean, I think everybody just pulled up and started looking to records and records and records and when you go, you always knew this was a genius, but when you really go and listen — you appreciate,” she said. “And we really have to start appreciating these artists while they are still here and not just wait until these moments to recognise the genius and the greatness of what they’ve done for music.”

The thought that a Missy/Prince collab was this close to happening is proper devastating tbh.
