Grimes says male producers have tried to coerce her into sex

The musician claims she has been in situations where male producers have said they ‘won't finish the song unless you come back to my hotel room’

Grimes has said that there have been “numerous situations” where male producers have said they won’t finish a song unless she has sex with them.

The Canadian musician released her latest album Art Angels in November, and is set to play Coachella this weekend. Ahead of the festival, she spoke to Rolling Stone about the album, the place of rock music, and taking advice from Jay Z.

Grimes was also asked how she felt about the recent lawsuit between Kesha and Dr Luke, which left Kesha locked in a contract with the producer that she alleges abused her. “I don't know enough about the specifics of that situation, because it seems very complicated,” she replied.

She then added: “But I will say that I’ve been in numerous situations where male producers would literally be like, ‘We won’t finish the song unless you come back to my hotel room.’ If I was younger or in a more financially desperate situation, maybe I would have done that. I don’t think there are few female producers because women aren’t interested. It’s difficult for women to get in. It’s a pretty hostile environment.”

Grimes recently discussed new material she’d been working on, saying that she was about “halfway done” with a new record, describing it as “more chill vibes, downtempos, synth-y shit” than Art Angels.
