At the close of Kanye’s West’s strange, stoned yet impassioned speech at the VMAs, he announced: "as you probably could have guessed, I have decided to run for president in 2020". He looked delighted with the announcement, positively beaming, high-fiving his comrades and embracing his loved ones after an emphatic mic drop and descent from the stage. So far, his policies include: free Yeezy Boosts for everyone. Take that, Obamacare.

So what does the White House think of Kanye’s assault on the Oval Office? White House press secretary Josh Earnest, travelling aboard Air Force One reportedly said that "they’re looking forward to seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his campaign hat."

It’s a brief, cryptic response to the storm that West has whipped up. Are they attempting to compare him to crazy, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, whose "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" campaign hat sold out this summer. However, the official Twitter account for The Democrats was quick to welcome Kanye into politics:

West may be totally inexperienced in the world of politics but rivals would be foolish to underestimate his undoubted ability to captivate a crowd. Comparing him to Trump is a mistake too – the 69-year old hotel owner may be gaffe-prone and may be pretty mad, but he’s doing worryingly well in his run for president. Kanye is over thirty years younger and would have a readymade inroad into the youth vote. Ignore him at your peril.
