When Snoop Dogg first introduced us to Colombian-born East Coast singer Kali Uchis, we were blown away. With her sugary, neo-soul sweetness and don’t-fuck-with-me low-rider style, she’s like a Disney Princess that decided to join a gang in Miami. And whilst her music drifts effortlessly through vintage reference points, from Billy Holiday to Gwen Stefani, her sound is genuinely forward and fresh, and not just because she gives off that baby doll-with-a-knuckleduster vibe. Anyway, as it’s our annual “Girls Rule the World” issue of Dazed, and Kali's got a new video for Loner right around the corner, we thought there’s no better time to get the soul star to select her ultimate Latin American female icons. Here are her choices (and yes, Shakira's in there obviously)...

ASTRUD GILBERTO

"Astrud always makes me feel better when I'm bummed out. she's constantly emphasizing that tomorrow is a new day and that true strength is to wear your heart on your sleeve."

IVY QUEEN

“If you really want to get over someone or something in your life I suggest you throw on some Ivy Queen. She will have you feeling extra bossy.”

SHAKIRA

"My favourite 'stage' of Shakira was the brunette punk rock one, but she'll always have a special place in my heart whatever she’s doing."

SELENA

"Selena is a classic and timeless singer and she really doesn’t needs an introduction. Her music is always good for the soul."

CELIA CRUZ

"I get lots of vibes from this one, and she always brings the sass. Rest in Peace to the legend — love you Celia!"

JEANETTE

"I always find that Jeanette is great to listen to when you're alone and feel like reflecting."

LA INDIA

"La India's voice is so powerful. It will give you life."

ELY GUERRA

"If you dance to any of her music with your boyfriend I swear you'll never break up."

CLAUDIA DE COLOMBIA

"My favorite song of hers is "Nuestra Historia De Amor" – this one gets me right in the feels!"

MARGARITA

"Margarita is the queen of cumbia. Don't throw her music on unless your prepared to shake your body so intensely that everyone around you gets uncomfortable."
