Space out with Alex Zhang Hungtai’s mix

The Dirty Beaches artist blends spiky post-punk with moody synthscapes

After spending most of 2014 flitting between Lisbon and Berlin, pop experimentalist Alex Zhang Hungtai (FKA Dirty Beaches) is putting down roots. Currently based in LA and working on new music under the alias Last Lizard, here he curates a selection of tracks mined from his friends’ hard drives, which he says marks the next chapter in his life.  “A new town and a new career,” he says. “I’ve been walking and driving around aimlessly since I got here. Getting lost mostly and trying to orient myself as California sinks in a bit more. So this mixtape is for discovering a new city, the songs feel lost in time, not particularly linear. Full circles. Laps, maybe? I’m seeing and hearing new things with each listen.” Spanning the synth visions of Bernard Szajner to The Durutti Column’s post-punk, it’s a spiky and spacey indication of where the artist is heading. Check it out below.
