Wriggly Scott's 93 'til Infinity hip-hop masterclass

Over an hour of golden era bangers in the mix, featuring Souls of Mischief, Wu-Tang, Onyx, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre

After the massive success of his Giorgio Moroder masterclass we asked Wriggly Scott, the co-host of NTS' Synth Hero show, to dig deep into the crates once more, but this time to select his favourite hip-hop bangers from 1993. Fresh from watching A Tribe Called Quest kill Wireless, he was well up for a nostalgic trip back to the old skool. "Growing up, hip hop for me was about discovery, not only in the musical sense but it transported you into another person's environment and day-to-day life," he says from his studio in East London. "We used to trade tapes at school and I remember one day my friend Jamal gave me a hand written cassette copy of an album by the Wu-Tang Clan, who I had never heard of. The bizarre kung fu film excerpts added a real sense of mystery, and the grainy recording made it one of the rawest albums I had heard up until then. That has really shaped my taste in music and I think to this day that raw energy is something I look for. This mix is a collection of tracks that were popular back then, featuring artists such as KRS-ONE, A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts who helped to establish that time as what many refer to now as 'The Golden Era of Hip Hop'. I'm not saying whether that's true or not but they definitely conjure up memories of what was a great time for me."
