Check out the new mix from Pipes as they play Franki Chan's Check Yo Ponytail party in LA fusing New York's vogue, drag and footwork vibes
Known for their massive parties in L.A. headed up by IHeartComix's Franki Chan, Check Yo Ponytail present their new mixtape from Pipes, exclusively on Dazed Digital here. With previous guests like Light Asylum, Zebra Katz and White Car playing, they'll now be welcoming the likes of El-P and Spaceghostpurrp. Here we chat to Franki Chan about his nights...
Dazed Digital: What is Check Yo Ponytail all about? What is the ethos, the vibes?
Franki Chan: I think the best way to describe Check Yo Ponytail is that it is a massive art project or a live magazine. Our mission is to put a spotlight on new and established artists that we feel are pushing music & ideas forward and combine them with other like minded musicians of any genre and graphic artists. To that end we also work closely with the artists that play to create original content both before the show (Like the Pipes Mixtape), during (with live animations by Demonbabies) and after (our CYP Presents video series). All of these work together to create a sense of unity and family amongst the artists and our crew which only perpetuates the project more. I also personally Illustrate each CYP flyer and DJ at every show, so there is a lot of personality, attention and love put into every event.
DD: Who/what are you listening to right now?
Franki Chan: SO many amazing new records out and about right now! I think 2012 has been my favorite year for new music maybe ever. Here is a list of some of my faves so far: King Tuff, Chairlift, Rustie, Beach House, El-P, Killer Mike, DIIV, Io Echo (soon to be out), Kindness, Chromatics, Japandroids, Grimes, Hundred Waters, Para One, Lemonade, Slow Club, Poolside
DD: What's next?
Franki Chan: The two next biggest projects for CYP outside of our regular shows are the follow up to last year's CYP USA Tour in Oct (with a whole new line-up and twice as many dates) and a feature length film based on the first tour. Besides that, in 2013 we hope to expand CYP overseas and do one off shows in Europe and Asia, have a CYP art show and do yet another USA Tour!
