To celebrate a decade of backing the right pop ponies, Moshi Moshi records took over matter, the new club at Greenwich's O2, for a night of bands, DJs and surprise guests. Having groomed Bloc Party and Hot Chip for success, Moshi Moshi are now home to a new wave of attention-getting bands who are dominating the live scene. Even if the label's not familiar, chances are that if you've been to a festival this summer, you will have nodded appreciatively along to at least one of their stable, which includes Slow Club, Tilly and the Wall, The Wave Pictures, Late of the Pier and Metronomy. matter was an inspired choice of venue, despite the super-club style bag-checks and pat-downs from stoney-faced security folk. Two rooms, two huge bars, plenty of balconies and stairs to hang around on and a good sized smoking area made for a pleasant ambience for the very smiley and friendly crowd - do those bag-checks really work?We arrived fresh off the clipper from London Bridge - the only way to travel up-river, darling - just as cheery alt-folk favourites Slow Club were taking the stage in the smaller room. Slow Club should be miniaturised so that they could be kept in a matchbox and opened up when you are having a bad day. Possibly the only band around to eschew a drum kit in favour of a kitchen chair, they played to a crowd of super-fans who sang word-perfectly to the old singles including favourites You and Me and Because We're Dead. The duo were let down by the sound quality though, especially during a beautiful version of Apples and Pears which was abandoned half-way through when the speakers attempted to harmonise with some ear-battering feedback screeches. This room was definitely one for the DJs rather than the guitars, and it came into its own later when the Moshi deckheads got their hands on the turntables for some quality early 90s dance. The Wave Pictures were excellent as always, and their brand of lo-fi witty charm ("If I made it through Christmas without smoking... I'll buy you bras instead of pickled eggs" from new single I Love You Like A Madman being a personal favourite) will hopefully have endeared them to a new crowd after too many years of being overlooked. Other notables were Tilly and the Wall and the Greco-Roman Soundsystem DJs who did a grand job of warming the crowd up for 'secret' headliners Hot Chip. They came on stage to a packed room of people ready to get their dance on, opening with an extended version of Over and Over and following it with an hour of crowd-pleasing electro-mixing that left the party people wild-eyed, sweaty, and ready to tackle the four hours of DJ madness that remained.Even the stagger round the entire circumference of the Dome for a taxi couldn't break the spell of one of the best tenth birthday parties this reviewer had been to since she was... about ten.
