The Dalston festival arrives once again this weekend, with the likes of The Horrors, to Kwes, Bicep and Hannah Holland playing who we speak to here about her Jungle set to come
Ahead of playing a special Jungle set at East London's annual Land of Kings Festival over this weekend, 4-5th May, Hannah Holland of Bastard Batty Bass spoke to us about her new label's ongoings and current musical faves.
I think living in Berlin really helped me learn [the art of mixing and groove]. I guess the essence of my sets has always been there, it's just the way I play it has been refined over the years
Held across various Dalston venues, the two-day festival will see bands like Factory Floor, Slow Club, and The Horrors play alongside DJs, and 'stages' from Durrr, dollop, Red Bull Music Academy and Moshi Moshi. Head down for the two-day shindig also bringing down treats from Hackney Film Festival, Live Speed Dating from Stoke Newington International Airport and Meat Wagon.
Dazed Digital: Having DJed for many years, how have your DJ sets progressed/changed til this point?
Hannah Holland: Over the years I've learnt the art of mixing, blending and groove. It's something only listening, playing a lot and feeling brings. I think living in Berlin really helped me learn that. So I guess the essence of my sets has always been there, it's just the way I play it has been refined over the years. Plus I tend to lean towards deeper and darker in my sets if the atmosphere allows me.
DD: What can we expect from your label for the rest of 2012?
Hannah Holland: We're just about to put music out from the Deadstock 33's, The Carry Nation, with remix duties from Daniel Avery, Dan Beaumont, Eskimo Twins, Severino & Luke Howard and more from myself. I'm also starting a new label with Batty Bass DJ resident Deboa called Native City, home to a more stripped back grooved based house and techno, releases from Smokin Jo, Deboa & myself and some brand new artists Citizen, JP and Donewrong. Plus! I'm currently writing an album, with various vocalists, including Shaun J Wright, Jahcoozi, Mama, Black Gold Buffalo are some of the collabs that are finished / near finishing and there's some more surprises to go! It draws from many different influences and sounds pretty out there! Myself and Alex Noble have plans to make a film to go with it. Watch this space.
DD: Who are you listening to in your spare time?
Hannah Holland: Planning To Rock, Little Dragon, Lee Scratch Perry, David Bowie, Hercules and The Love Affair, The Duke Spirit, ESG, Moodymann, New Order off the top of my head!
DD: What are you most excited about right this second?
Hannah Holland: I'm currently doing a course in engineering, mixing and mastering and I'm very excited about the new techniques I'm learning, and being able to apply them straight to my music.
DD: If in doubt, play ____?
Hannah Holland: Re-Bokk Robot (Hannah Holland) _ POSH! The Prince (Batty Bass)
