Behind The Masc: Rethinking Masculinity launches today on Dazed Beauty

The new campaign explores what ‘masculinity’ means in 2019

Following on from the Digital Spa – which gave readers a chance to escape the stresses of everyday life via online wellbeing treatments – Dazed Beauty has today launched Behind The Masc: Rethinking Masculinity, a campaign dedicated to exploring what masculinity means in 2019.

With a host of original photo stories shot all around the world, you can see teenagers in Tokyo lensed by Monika Mogi, through to a gym in Kerala that teaches a 2000-year-old martial art. In South Africa, Kristin-Lee Moolman shoots make-up artist and drag performer Daniel Sällström, while in London, Jess Kohl photographs a group of butch women proving masculinity isn’t just for men.

The OA’s Ian Alexander pens a personal letter to his masculinity as a trans man, and in post-Soviet Transnistria, Anton Polyakov photographs the women who are working in male-dominated industries. For our sole video Move Like A Man – shot by editor-in-chief Bunny Kinney – nine dancers interpret ‘masculinity’ to Obongjayar’s track “Endless”.

Elsewhere, our longer-form features debunk modern myths of masculinity, investigate mental health in men and what we can do to offer IRL help, and explore why older bodybuilders endure strenuous regiments years after their prime. There’s fun shortreads too in the form of IG accounts to follow, how to channel your Mars energy, and ten tips from a legit masturbation coach

After enlisting photographers and writers to share their contributions, Dazed Beauty asked its readers what masculinity means to them via a census. Read more here and Nellie Eden’s editor’s letter contextualising the whole campaign.
