It‘s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the first look at the forthcoming BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s debut novel Conversations With Friends has finally arrived. A selection of new images from the upcoming show were published today on Vanity Fair, offering viewers a sneak peek of what to expect.
First announced in 2020, Conversations With Friends follows the huge success of the TV adaptation of Rooney’s second novel Normal People over the first stint of lockdown. The plot follows Frances, a 21-year-old English lit student in Dublin, her tenuous relationship with ex-girlfriend and current best friend Bobbi, and the pair’s heated connection with an older couple, Melissa and Nick.
The upcoming 12-episode series stars Dazed cover star and The Miseducation of Cameron Post actor Sasha Lane as Bobbi and Alison Oliver as Frances. Girls’ Jemima Kirke plays journalist Melissa, with Joe Alwyn playing her husband, Nick.
Lenny Abrahamson, who worked on Normal People, is returning to direct Conversations With Friends. “What we’ve ended up with is something that has a kind of aesthetic family resemblance to the other series,” says Abrahamson, “but is definitely its own thing,” he told Vanity Fair.
Conversations With Friends premieres this spring on Hulu in the US and BBC Three in the UK. In the meantime, you can watch some brief clips in a teaser for the BBC’s 2022 shows below, and take a first look at some stills from the show above.
