Cruel Intentions is set to be rebooted as a TV series set in Washington DC

The updated storyline will task two ruthless step siblings with seducing the Vice President’s daughter

An updated take on the cult film Cruel Intentions is reportedly in the works, set in Washington D.C., with a storyline that includes seducing the Vice President’s daughter (naturally).

Like Roger Kumble’s 1999 teen movie, the new version will be based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, revolving around two ruthless step siblings who will do “whatever’s necessary to preserve their power and reputations”.

Transplanting the action from New York City to Washington, D.C., however, it is set explore the Greek life hierarchy at an elite college, which is in turmoil following a “brutal hazing incident”.

Following another attempt at rebooting the original film, which fell through in 2016, Deadline reports that the new version is currently being developed to air on Amazon’s IMDb TV, in partnership with Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios, and Original Film.

The pilot will be penned by Phoebe Fisher (who’s also working on Petra Collins’ debut feature, Spiral), alongside Sara Goodman. Both writers also previously worked on the upcoming TV series reboot of another Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Last year, Gellar reunited with her Cruel Intentions co-star Selma Blair to recreate their iconic kiss from the film, with a 2020 twist. Casting details for the new series are yet to be announced.
