It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the 12th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race starts today (February 28). Over the next few weeks, 13 new queens will battle it out to become America’s next drag superstar, and with a star-spangled slew of guest judges, including the likes of New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, rap icon Nicki Minaj (!), and internet fashion daddy Jeff Goldblum, we’re in for a treat.
Ahead of this edition, we went down to the first edition of DragCon UK, where some of our favourite queens of season’s past talked us through their looks. Among them was everyone’s favourite Northern Irish queen Blu Hydrangea, who gave us her best, campy rendition of Disney’s Tinkerbell (“A whip of the wand and I’ll make you look fierce!”); season nine runner up (or snubbed winner?) Shea Couleé, whose crystal-netted outfit was a nod to 90s New York club kids; and Alexis, mother of Vanjie (Vanjie, Vanjie, Vaaanjie), Matteo, whose sparkling look is… BAM.
With the latest season sashaying onto our screens in a matter of hours, we welcome the likes of Crystal Methyd, Heidi N Closet, Dahlia Sin, Aiden Zhane, Gigi Goode, Jackie Cox, Jaida Essence Hall, Nicky Doll, Rock M Sakura, Sherry Pie, Widow Von’Du, Jan, and Brita (formerly Brita filter) into our hearts. Who knows what this season will bring – Who will be the first to go? Who will win the snatch game? Will Daddy Goldblum grace us with a jazz piano rendition of “Sissy That Walk”? Watch this space.
