It’s here: RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has dropped its first official trailer. Parodying the old-school British sitcom, the queens are set in a kitsch living room straight out of Coronation Street, as a talking portrait of Mama Ru tells them to “prepare for the ride of your life”. The set then transforms into a fully blown 70s-style disco as the queens sashay and death-drop to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, with a campy cameo from 70s anthropomorphic fox puppet, Basil Brush, who emerges singing out of one of the queens’ wigs.
The spoof teaser marks two weeks before the show’s premiere on October 3, as the “search for the UK’s very first drag race superstar” begins. The show announced its contestants last month, with Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Cheryl Hole, Scaredy Kat, Divina De Campo, Crystal, Sum Ting Wong, Gothy Kendol, Vinegar Strokes and The Vivienne set as the ten queens competing in Drag Race’s first British instalment. The show will also feature a star-studded cast of guest judges, including Andrew Garfield, Maisie Williams, and Michaela Coel.
Since premiering in 2009, the culture-shifting show has gained global acclaim, with RuPaul having recently picked up his fourth consecutive Emmy as a reality host.
You can watch RuPaul’s Drag Race UK on Thursday nights at 8pm from October 3 on BBC iPlayer. In the meantime, you can read an interview with contestant Blu Hydrangea from the autumn/winter 2018 issue of Dazed here, and watch the trailer below.
