Some dickhead wore a ‘Weinstein is innocent’ shirt to the Suspiria premiere

Just plain gross really

This weekend saw the Suspiria remake premiere take place at the Venice Film Festival – cast members Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tilda Swinton, and others were present. One man decided this was the moment to debut a t-shirt emblazoned with a supportive message for Harvey Weinstein.

Luciano Silighini Garagnani, an Italian casting director, filmmaker, Conservative, and all-out D-lister, walked the red carpet in blue jeans, trainers, a blazer, and a ‘WEINSTEIN IS INNOCENT’ shirt in support of the producer who has dozens of sexual harassment, rape, and assault claims made against him.

Rather than being a warped jibe at the festival circuit, described as a “hunting ground” for predators like Weinstein, it looks like Garagnani was actually making a case for the producer, who could face life imprisonment for his current charges. He’s an intense conservative, whose last film in 2017 gave a bizarrely positive spin to ex Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s infamous ‘bunga-bunga’ sex parties. Garagnani has also been a vocal supporter of the Republican party and donated to Donald Trump’s campaign.

Alberto Barbera, the festival’s chief, told Deadline Garagnani’s stunt was a “stupid move”. There’s no word on whether any action will be taken.

Venice Film Festival organisers recently pledged alongside other festivals like Cannes to bring about better gender representation among its films and filmmakers entered, as part of the 5050 x 2020 movement. Only one film in this year’s VFF was directed by a woman – Australian director Jennifer Kent, for her film The Nightingale.

Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to claims made by three women in court.
