The caption was accompanied by a picture of a woman posing on a street corner, her mismatched outfit consisting of a corset top, baggy basketball shorts and a pair of pom-pom stiletto shoes. While the mean-spirited but kind of accurate observation referenced Charli’s 2016 style, in the decade since the popstar has, quite literally, become a bona fide fashion icon. Not only is Charli a runway show regular and Met Gala mainstay, but she practically invented an aesthetic with the über-success of Brat. Fashion has become such a central part of her output that her newest album – Music, Fashion, Film – was dedicated in part to it, with songs like “SS26” and “Card Declined” dissecting her relationship to the industry. So, when New York producer Luis Fernando decided to throw a party in honour of MFF, the city’s club kids knew they had to come correct on the fashion front. With NY’s finest DJs playing new and old Charli, people channelled the vibe of the new rock era with lots of leather, low-slung belts and indie sleaze references, like ripped fishnets, striped camis and big silver crucifixes. As we’ve seen at previous Charli nights, angels love to reinterpret her style to produce a sea of xcx clones, and it wasn’t just MFF they were plucking from. The Brat era is still well and truly their favourite reference (baby), and they still can’t get enough of black booty shorts, plain white vests, homemade Brat merch and sunglasses in the club. Having said that though, the new era is clearly making its mark – a trio of fans hit the dancefloor in makeshift tees, the words Music, Fashion and Film scrawled across them.
