“This series highlights a certain stillness within my work,” says 21-year-old Paris-based photographer Lea Colombo of her latest series. “Stillness” might not be what you would usually associate with shooting backstage at the world’s biggest fashion weeks – something Colombo has been doing for Dazed for five seasons – but looking at these images it's undeniable that despite the chaos of the shows, a sense of calm has emerged. This new series contrasts intimate portraits of models (which meant “trying to find that minute backstage during the madness to photograph them”) with “various landscapes and perspectives” – still lives captured on Colombo’s travels from city to city. The resulting diptychs clash closely cropped backstage portraits with outside spaces – sky, suburban streets and even the hills of LA. But it's not such a straightforward divide – towering buildings and crowded streets remind us that sometimes, the world beyond the shows can be a claustrophobic place too.
