DKNY is turning 20 and what better way to celebrate than with a short film and photo shoot styled by Katie Shillingford and shot by Pierre Debusschere for the new issue of Dazed & Confused. Cast in black light the shoot sees a DKNY clad model painted in vibrant fluros posing in an out-of-this-world, 80s inspired backdrop. As her hair glows bright green and pink and her lips an eerie orange, the model takes on an ethereal, almost alien presence. Harking back to the days when DKNY was first born, the colours, super minis and batwing sleeves give a distinct sense of 80s style.
The shoot is but one facet of a very grand birthday celebration. The 20 year anniversary has also seem Karan collaborate with iconic brands including Moet & Chandon to design unique, special edition bottle of champagne, and with Levis to create an all American collection of jeans featuring a reworking of the boyfriend jean that stared in her first ever show in 1989. Karan has also launched a maternity line to mark the occasion, and appropriately ended DKNY’s SS09 show at Bryant Park in September 2008 with a chorus line of children singing ‘Happy Birthday’ as they walked down the runway with models wearing vintage DKNY.
