New glamour and why van der Horst sounds like a 'mad professor'
Maarten van der Horst's amped up Spring/Summer 13 womenswear, graduating from Fashion East this season, pretty much reversed what the middle class have been banging on about for the past few years: how carrier bags are awful and we should all be reusing beige hemp totes.
Sexing up Tesco load-luggers, bin liners and more in his prints, the collection is a punk rock procession of lo-fi for those with attitude. Complimenting his anarchic spirit, the designer, whose collection was styled by Dazed's Emma Wyman, also cut Swarovski crystal fabric in crab, shark and bat shapes, applying to (with sharp contrast) to utilitarian garments – as seen in this video premiere.
"Working with Swarovski Crystal Fabric on utilitarian-inspired silhouettes and fabric gave a good image of the girl I want to dress and reflected my view on what glamour and luxury can be," van der Horst tells Dazed Digital. "It can be young, exciting and even slightly subversive!"
