Inspired by the "Dance of Death" paintings, and the idea of the last evening of an opulent man's life. It was about men eveningwear but avoiding the tuxedo, finding an other way to dress men elegantly. I work a lot around cuts, and I tried to extend normal lines of tailoring into something more about fluidity, I also work quite a lot around textures and ornaments, and how ornament can become shape. Describe the moment you realised you wanted to be a fashion designer? When I realised there was more to say in fashion than just references. Who is your all time fashion idol? Elsa Schiaparelli In a sentence how would you describe your work/style? Atmospheric, sombre, study of shapes and cuts, sometimes ornamental. From the recent S/S 09 shows, which shows were your favourite collections, and why? Jil Sander - it had such a strong view on the 1920's avant-garde, and a really good translation into powerful classy modern ready to wear with an edgy tribal feeling. Like a minimal version of André Breton's cabinet.Which new designers do you respect and why? Peter Pilotto - they have a very cool sense of chic and a very instinctive approach of cut and colours. If you could go back in time and experience any fashion moment, what would it be? The 1950's with the golden age of couture in Paris If you could get any model/ anyone to wear your clothes, who would it be - who is your muse and why? Sigourney Weaver would look dashing in my meanswear. My muse is kind of abstract it's more a concept, an image of who i would like to define. If you were to shoot your campaign and you could get your dream team of photographer, stylist, and model and do anything you wanted, who and what would it be? Willy Vanderperre as a photographer, Olivier Rizzo as a stylist, with an installation of Olafur Eliasson Where do you see yourself/your label for A/W 09? Who knows what the wind will bring!Where do you see yourself/ your label for A/W 29? I never look to far in the future. Tell us any anecdotes about the making of your last collection. I nearly got blind by handstiching gold paillettes for a month. If you weren’t a fashion designer what would you be? Sculptor or surgeon.
