With one half set to front the latest Religion S/S12 campaign, the Swedish pop duo make us an exclusive new mix
Known for their dark electronic sounds and delectable melodies, Swedish electro-pop duo, Icona Pop have caught the attention of cult clothing label Religion, who have enlisted one half of the duo, Aino, to front their latest Spring / Summer '12 campaign. We speak to the duo about their personal style and musical loves alongside an exclusive and highly eclectic mix featuring the likes of Metronomy, The Kills and Fake Blood...
We like to mix masculine and feminine stuff. We love layers that extend our movements on stage and sheer fabrics to show our silhouettes in the stage light. We think how we dress is a reflection of how we feel in the moment
Dazed Digital: Why do you think you work so well as a duo?
Icona Pop: It's actually really strange. Even when we are not working we want to hang out. It might be that we have so many in jokes, so we are kind of forced to hang out with each other as no one else understands us! We have so much fun together and we compliment each other very well. The most important thing is respect for each other. Some days if we don't feel like talking we just hang out quietly in the woods and other days we can't stop raving. We are better together!
DD: What's the most annoying thing about the other member?
Caroline: The most annoying thing about Aino is that she always gets away with things and makes me do stuff by acting cute and using her puppy eyes.
Aino: Caroline has a really dangerous superpower. She makes things sound so easy and she can captivate you with her stories and quickly convince you that her idea is the best you've heard in a long time. Even though it's sometimes not.
DD: Who did you listen to growing up and has that changed much today?
Aino: It was a major clash of everything from Beethoven, Burning Spears to Nsync. I don't think there is such a big difference to what I listen to nowadays I just feel that the music has developed and gotten a little dirtier, electronic and a little bit more chaotic.
Caroline: I grew up listening to music all the time. I listened a lot to Queen, Prince, Destiny's Child, Nsync and Michael Jackson when I was a kid. I always stumble over something and then I'm stuck listening to that so much I get tired of it. I love to DJ and travel because you always find so much new good stuff. Nowadays, just like Aino says, it's more electronic, dirty and hard music.
DD: How much did your Scandinavian environment growing up affect your sound?
Icona Pop: Maybe more then we realise. It wasn't until we started to travel a lot that we realised that our sound was a little bit Scandinavian.
DD: How would you describe your personal style? Does this reflect in your music do you think?
Icona Pop: We like to mix masculine and feminine stuff. We love layers that extend our movements on stage and sheer fabrics to show our silhouettes in the stage light. We think how we dress is a reflection of how we feel in the moment.
DD: How does Religion fit into this remit?
Icona Pop: Very well. We love their stuff! You can mix and match different pieces and get so many cool looks.
DD: What's next?
Icona Pop: Our album is finally done and we have a couple of singles coming out. We're so excited to play live and DJ everywhere around the world this Summer! Festivals festivals festivals! Hope to see all of you there.
