The World AIDS Day has been around since 1988, the illness a lot longer than that. Today offers the world a chance to stand up and unite with the estimated 33.3 million people worldwide that suffer from HIV. There are plenty of ways doing it; raising money, spreading awareness, helping out, supporting the suffering and their families. Belgian brand Maison Martin Margiela has for years been involved in the fight through their own very unique way.
The classic MMM V-neck T-shirt with written messages on the top half has been around since A/W94, and have been raising money for the cause ever since. Through a clever seasonal re-design - every season sees a new colour combo, or the text in another language - the T-shirt is kept up to date and continuously interesting, easy to justify as an ongoing purchase project. For this season, and the 2011 World AIDS Day, MMM created a series of images where friends and family of the brand where photographed wearing a tee from the archives. The cast includes Lou Doillon, Michael Stipe, Philip Stark, Alison Goldfrapp, Andreas Gursky.... and Peaches, seen here exclusively on Dazed Digital...
Dazed Digital: How did you get involved with MMM on this project?
Peaches: Actually, it was through Michael Stipe. He suggested me for the project.
DD: Did you choose the pink T-shirt yourself, and why in that case?
Peaches: No, I think that was the shirt that was brought to me - but I like it!
DD: Are you doing anything else for Worlds AIDS Day?
Peaches: I'm sure I will be tweeting messages about World AIDS day the entire day.
DD: Did you have any MMM AIDS t-shirts before this?
Peaches: No this is my first!
DD: What's next for you?
Peaches: I'm continuing my 'DJ/MC Extravaganza' dates and in January I will start to study opera for a spring opening of Monteverdi's Orfeo where I will sing the part of Orfeo.
