Club Monaco x Dazed

The New York-based lifestyle provocateurs collaborate with Dazed on their European launch

The renowned lifestyle label Club Monaco has carved a reputation as a purveyor of timeless fashion. For 26 years, their trademark black-and-white aesthetic has been captured via countless collaborations with legendary international fashion photographers, such as Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, Peter Lindbergh and Mario Testino.

Over time they evolved from their monochrome roots to embrace colour, giving their legacy a creative twist with Ryan McGinley’s beautifully candid S/S11 lookbook. They take that even further this season, collaborating with Dazed to celebrate the European expansion of Club Monaco, and producing an autumn/winter collection that radiates 1970s London style.

Shot by Andrea Spotorno, the collection features a cast of musicians, actresses and models from Paris and London, all of whom embody Club Monaco’s flair, wit and wistful style. In front of Spotorno’s lens are the emerging French film starlet Lou Lesage, Parisian screen sirens Bambou Gainsbourg and Élodie Bouchez, boundary-blurring musicians Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Tara Ferry (son of Bryan) and Finn Vine (Genuflex), plus actress Anna Brewster, model Sara Blomqvist, stylist Valentine Fillol Cordier and style blogger Leandra Medine.

“These are pieces that are cool but low-key. Think of a beautifully constructed trench that fits, flatters and gives you a certain confidence. That’s the basis of timeless classics,” explains Caroline Belhumeur, Club Monaco’s head womenswear designer. “Over time, our collections have evolved into a spectrum of neutrals with accents of colour, strongly influenced by light, which allows us a lot of interplay between texture and pattern,” adds Club Monaco’s head menswear designer Aaron Levine. “There are so many different elements that can be considered timeless from so many different cultures. We embrace our legacy, but it does not define our future – colour creates an emotional reaction.”

The label’s constant evolution is based on the brand’s spirit of collaboration, evidenced by the snapshot gallery of global influences featured on their CM Culture Club blog, written by the team within CM as well their extended family of favourite photographers (including Skye Parrott), stylists (such as Lisa von Weise), jewellery designer Pamela Love and musicians including The Like.

The blog showcases the art, fashion, music, travel and food from around the world that inspires the label, and Club Monaco’s curatorial guard also extends to their stores, with Selima Salaun of Selima Optique bringing in one of a kind vintage eyewear and covetable vintage bags, art chose by Tim Goossens of Ford Projects, and additional pioneering menswear selections from Michael Williams of the celebrated fashion blog A Continuous Lean. “We’re all very curious and are inspired by all types of people, music, art and lifestyles,” says Belhumeur. “We like finding interesting tangents that just naturally evolve out of the collaborative process. It’s this exploration and free exchange of ideas that keeps the designs fresh. Sometimes it’s the smallest or most unexpected things that lead to the coolest ideas.”
